RSS Historical Society Meeting Coming Up

For all you history buffs, newcomers, natives and hungry folks here's an invitation that will be hard to refuse! The Southport Historical Society will hold its general membership meeting at the Southport Community Building on Thursday, November 15. A potluck dinner at 6:30 will precede the business and program. Election of officers for the 2008-09 term will be held and the program will be presented by Lewis Hardee, Jr., Southport native and local history author. Mr. Hardee will show photos and tell of his recent trip to Estonia to research an incident that happened in 1948 when near-starved Estonian refugees reached Southport shores after a 7-week crossing of the Atlantic in a 40-foot boat. Come hear the rest of this strange story and meet descendants of those refugees who still live in the area. An added feature to the program will be photos and a report on Mr. Hardee's visit to Southport, England. The dinner and meeting are open to the public at no cost, just bring a dish to add to the potluck or come for the program at 7:30. For more information e-mail the society at shs@ec.rr.com or call 457-0579.
